So much about The Five Lost Days appeals to my adventurous side. Taking place in Belize, a small Latin American country I long to see, it focuses on Michael Burns, a documentary film director who takes his crew to the jungles to film a “curandero”. Curanderos are a sort of Mayan medicine man, close to extinction. Their focus on herbs and medicinal plants only heightened my fascination with the book.
Kelly, an American who lives in the jungle with distant pot-smoking rebel husband Frank, works for an American pharmaceutical company. She was sent to Belize ten years previous to study the healing plants; in her love for the jungle and a deep affection for the elderly curandero, she stays on much longer than she’d originally intended.
As Burns soon finds out, the five days he’s scheduled to film are considered in Mayan tradition to be The Five Lost Days – an evil time Mayans of the old ways see fit to stay home and wait out in fear But the show must go on… if Burns can help it.

This novel sounds like it would be a very good escape…. In northern Canada it is still very much winter (-30 recently!!) so dreaming of being somewhere tropical (even if not idealistic) would be nice. I am also very interested in the medicinal use of plants. Thanks!

I am always looking for a good read…Thank you.
I, too, would love to see and explore Belize. It’s a beautiful country with an easy lifestyle. As we grow older, “easy” is a word that seeps into the bones. “The Five Lost Days” would be a way to chill out, lay back, and get into the spirit of Belize. Thanks for this offer.
It just looks interesting.
Here is my silly saturday entry. Laugh today!
going on holidays need a good read, count me in..
I have not read anything from this author and would love a chance to get aquainted
As someone who has always been fascinated with cultural anthropology, this book looks to be a great read; I spent a few summer months in the jungles of Mexico and Belize while in University, assisting with a dig at a Mayan site. And since most aboriginal cultures are quickly disappearing and being assimilated into our current societies, these may be the last remanants of a time when much was known of the true spiritual and human ways. Please enter me and thank you!
This sounds like a fantastic book – I can’t wait to read it!

I am a voracious reader and am always looking for new and interesting books to read. I have read all the Ludlums, all the Micheners, all the Dick Francis, and am looking for a new author to engage me. The excerpt from this book captured my attention and I would love to read it.
One can never have too many books
nor can one travel too much. Right
now however, armchair traveling is mostly what I get to do. This book would show me a world I’ll never get to see in person.
I did subscribe.
sounds cool,
I really enjoy reading books with a medical twist!
