Several years ago, my husband decided to buy me a special unabridged dictionary for Christmas. He headed to a large bookstore chain and asked a young sales clerk for help. When confronted with the task of searching for the dictionary, she seemed confused and headed for the computer to help her find this so very unusual book.
“No,” she said, “we don’t carry those.”
“You don’t carry an unabridged dictionary?” my husband asked in surprise.
Leaning over her computer to take a better look, my husband saw what the sales clerk had typed in: “On a Bridge Dictionary.”
This is why we shop at Schuler Books & Music. I’ve shopped there since childhood, back when there were no large chain bookstores, and it’s still my favorite. They’ve got a wide selection of books, the biggest assortment of magazines and newspapers I’ve seen, and a great cafe. But more importantly, their sales staff is filled with readers who actually know what their talking about. They understand books. And dictionaries.
So you’re not from these parts? No need to fear. This family owned business not only encompasses five of the nation’s largest indie bookstores, they have a wonderful online presence as well, featuring $1 shipping. Schuler Books & Music is providing a $10 gift card to one of you if you’d like to give them a whirl. You’ll enjoy shopping online with them, and you’ll have no problem finding what you’re looking for. They’ve got everything.
Even unabridged dictionaries.

They have very reasonable shipping and handling rates.

I like the fact that they sell used books as well as new ones. And shipping is only a buck a book! Thanks for the opportunity.
I like that they combine selling books w/ community
I love the variation of books you feature. Excellent-looking site.
I love that you are connected to several book clubs and that you offer discounts to people who buy in those book clubs, I think thats a great incentive to read! Your website is very easy to navigate as well, which is a plus!
That $1 shipping is definitely a good deal! I also like that they sell used books too.
That is such a funny story!
I live overseas presently, so I imagine shipping is not $1. I like sites were I can browse books by subject too, and it doesn’t seem you can do that on this site. For that reason and because I’m overseas, I can’t imagine leaving Amazon, but it’s nice that you can be somewhere where you can get personal and knowledgeable service when you’re searching for books!
I see–if I click on featured titles, I can browse by subject. I take that back.
great selection, but i couldn’t find on a bridge dictionaries either
Interesting and lovely variety of books which appeals to me greatly. Love the used book since it interests me as well.
I am lucky enough to live near Schuler’s and I love the store, but I have never been to their website. Wow, I love that dollar a book mailing charge. Great for winter when it’s hard to get out.
I love the dollar shipping too. That is great!
I love that it’s family owned w/affordable prices. The reviews are great.

I love books count me in.
The $1 shipping is fantastic. Many times I don’t order from companies because of the high shipping costs. I also like their “Featured Titles” section which includes “Best Sellers” and “New Releases!” Please enter me in your drawing. Thanks,Cindi
My favourite part about the site is that it is family owned.
You can never have too many books
WONDERFUL Selection–so easy to navigate …a great site. THANKS
I like that shipping is only a dollar. I typed in my favorite authors, and they carry the books I like. I will definitely shop here for books in the future.
Nice to find a on-line store that has inexpensive shipping and isn’t a “big retailer”. I love the family owned businesses — the customer service is usually much better. I also like that on their website you can buy used books:)
i want to win
Ooh! $1 shipping!

That would be nice!
I like that they have a Mythical Creatures and Magical Readers book club. If I lived nearby, I would absolutely want to join!
I like the Newsworthy section – interesting tidbits. I also liked the Booksense Best Sellers section – it’s a great way to find new books to read!
I used to live in a town where there was a Schuler Books and so I know how wonderful it is. They had the most phenomenal children’s section I have ever seen and they always had fun book characters coming to visit. I learned about such wonderful authors when I visited that store and I also found lots of books with activities to do with my kids. Schuler Books is fantastic!
Thanks for the great site recommendation! Who could beat that shipping? If I won, I would purchase this book that I’ve had on my wishlist: http://schuler.booksense.com/NASApp/store/Product?s=showproduct&isbn=9780939513413
Thanks!
I like the reviews along with the nice sized photo of the book’s jacket—it helps me to remember.
That’s a great site, neatly laid out and lots of interesting features such as the ‘this day in history’ and ‘word of the day’ bits. I like that kind of extra tidbits
And they buy used books!

You can not beat a site that has shipping for $1.00 — I have already been making a wish list — thanks for sharing this with us. You’ve been blogged at http://threedifferentdirections.blogspot.com/
I like the Book Days Program that helps raise funds for organizations.
I would buy a unabridged dictionary, I don’t have one and am frustrated looking up words.
ah… Schuler Books.
I promise to look at online buying with them…but they ARE my brick & mortar real-life GO-TO Bookstore. Schuler’s summer reading program for children was INSTRUMENTAL in giving the kidlets I know & Love and extra push towards reading (some kids need incentives much more than others.) I just recently read that the stores are suffering and had already decided to shop local more often! whether I buy in store or online, to show support !
