Powerful and written in a solid voice, Pavel Brycz’s “I, City”is a book told from the perspective of the city itself.  The book’s narrator is actually the city of Most in the Czech Republic; having watched its inhabitants through omnipresent eyes, the city tells us stories, gives us short glimpses into the lives of the dwellers of Most.  While in many ways, the stories of the people could happen in any city, in Most the inhabitants are met with their own challenges – the challenges that occur while living in a city in decline.  But the city seems sympathetic towards those who dwell within her walls, somewhat proud of their strength and resilience.  We get to hover over the streets, sneak into the buildings, listen in on conversations, and thus get to know Most.

Each chapter is an appearance of new characters, offering the opportunity to observe a scene of life, which leaves one with the sensation of walking through a city invisible.  Pavel Brycz understands how to say much with few words, giving a resonating power to each short chapter which presents a series of stunning impressions on the reader.  Beautifully translated, the book flows effortlessly in English.

Originally written in Czech, “I, City” is the first of Pavel Brycz’s books to be translated into English.  Published by Twisted Spoon Press of Prague, Czech Republic, the book was translated by Joshua Cohen and Marketa Hofmeisterova.  I have a copy of “I, City” sent to me straight from Prague to give to one carp(e) libris reviews reader.  The winner of this book is guaranteed a unique and beautiful book, not only in writing style but in its physical appearance as well.  Ready to enter?

  1. I am a happy native of the city of Los Angeles. My city would really like me because I adore my city and the weather. I never complain about it like some people do. My city would see that I appreciate the exciting history and I visit its many landmarks (Hollywood Bowl, Graumann’s Chinese Theatre, Griffith Observatory) on a regular basis. In my opinion the best part of my city is the ethnic diversity! My city would like that I visit Chinatown, Little Tokoyo, the Fairfax Jewish area and Little Armenia. My city would enjoy that I like to run around Downtown oe Santa Monica and try to do as many activities on a weekend as time allows. The best city in the world is Los Angeles.

  14. My city would tell (and show) the story of my life here, always planting flowers everywhere, trying to make the place a little friendlier for the area birds and critters….as well as adding color and fragrance and a welcome…. for all.

“Perhaps Eastlake would look like a jewel looking from the moon or outer space because of a lady who likes to plant!”

My roots are in Prague also, I’ve never been there except in my dreams.

  15. my town would say, he lives here? really? are you sure?

  18. I live in a small town in Oregon, and I think my town would say “your ancestors lived here and you didn’t even know it.” Since moving here I found out that my great-great grandmother lived across the river from where we live, and that my mom’s birth family (she was adopted) is related by marriage to the town founder. It’s a small world.

  22. I live in Chalk River, Ontario in Canada. Its a very small village off the Trans Canada Highway. It would say that most people who live here either work at the AECL (Atomic Energy of Canada) or CFB Petawawa. I am home to the nuclear plant (yep that’s true…not always the best thing to think about but its cheap to live here!). I am home to a Butcher shop which serves the best shish kebabs, a gas station, and a corner store. I am also home to many types of wildlife such as bears and raccoons which like to raid the garbage cans of the homes in the area at night. I am a peaceful community and where everyone is really friendly to their neighbour.

  29. I live in a town full of wonderful, caring and friendly people, but the fact is that it’s still a very “closed” and old-fashioned community. If I were to tell my story, I know they’d say “Well sure, but she’s not from here and we don’t know her people.”

  38. This reminds me of why I love old homes! Every time we go on a house tour or check out interesting old homes, I often wonder how many families have lived there and what they were like. You know, if only the walls could talk type of thing! Actually, I have researched two of the older homes we have lived in and rehabbed. What fun!
