Covering some of the best Mexican short story writing, Best of Contemporary Mexican Fiction offers an anthology of stories translated from Spanish to English for the first time, all written by some of Mexico’s finest authors born after 1945. The short fiction ranges from the intellectually stimulating to the humorous with everything in between; but be it serious or funny, it’s all great writing that will keep the reader hooked.
Part of the Latin American Literature Series published by Dalkey Archive Press, Best of Contemporary Fiction contains both the English translations and the original Spanish; English on the right hand page, Spanish on the left. If you haven’t read many translated works, translations can sometimes be a little jerky or feel contrived. I have never experienced that in any of the books published by Dalkey, and I certainly don’t here. The English versions read smoothly, and Spanish speakers will enjoy reading the stories in the original. As an English speaker, I’m happy to see the stories of Best of Contemporary Mexican Fiction translated, thus reaching a larger audience of enthusiastic readers, of which I am certainly one.

i love to read and your review has me interested
I love good writing and am very interested in world literature.
My mother is Mexican and always loved reading to us, in English and Spanish! I think she’d be thrilled if I won this for her. She’s got a 72nd birthday coming up and still loves to read good literature. This looks like her kind of book!
I’d love to read this because I like to discover authors I’ve never read before

I would love to be able to give this book to my son-in-law. He is a Mexican-American script & short story writer and I’m sure he would enjoy reading the works of others.
Reading a story is just the beginning…an understanding of people comes with time and maturity…having this collection of stories to read by Mexican authors would be a dream come true for me…I love the culture and I have planted Mexican flowers in my garden, including portulacas and sunflowers of all kinds…and I’d be so proud to win and read all summer, as my garden grows.
This should be interesting and with the duplicate pages, a chance to brush up on what little Spanish I know
I cant read enough I so want this
this would be a welcome addition to our school library

I would love to win this collection because I find Hispanic folktales fascinating and would love to read these contemporary stories and see how they compare to old folklore.
i’d love to read this
I like to learn about other cultures. To learn about everyday life, fiction is often more informative and interesting than works of non-fiction. Thanks for the giveaway!

Your review caught my eye and since I love learning about other cultures, I figure it would be a great read!

This would be awesome, I grew up in new mexico, and occasionally went down across the border. Appreciate the chance!
sounds like it would be a good book
I love to read short stories and fiction but have never read any Mexican fiction so I think it’s about time that I broaden my horizons alittle. I also have never read a book that has been translated so I think that would be interesting as well. This sounds like something I should definitely take the time to look at and read so to be entered would be wonderful. Thank you for the chance.

i love short stories and this is intriqueing.
I think that’s brilliant, having both languages included – I always wonder what I’m missing reading only the translated version of stories.
I have had a fascination with Mexican cinema and literature since I was very young. My mom would let me go to the Edison Theatre in NY to watch Mexican movies every week. I am sure I will cherish this book should I be selected. I would love to see more giveaways of this nature featuring other languages and countries as well!
It sounds interesting and a change from my usual readings.
Thursday’s entry. Thanks!

TGIF !!!
I’m a voracious reader with an affinity for international fiction; my passion has been South Asian writers of late, but I’ve been gravitating towards Latin American authors as well. I love to discover different worlds and peoples and short stories are like meeting a myriad of peoples and hearing their voices all contained within one book. Please enter me. Thank you!
I have to admit that I’m not very familiar with Mexican literature, which is why I’m so intrigued by this book. It would be a great introduction for me!

Happy Saturday!
With all the news coming out of Mexico of late (the drug wars, illegals, etc.) and my own experience the south western US, this would be a lovely introduction to the voices of Mexico outside of the propoganda, media. Please accept this as my entry for March 28, 2009… Thank you!
I’ve been reading some positive reviews about the book and i’m always interest in reading non-american fiction (i like it , but it is all around us and i’ve read a lot of it).
